Electric Autonomous Wheelchair Wins CES Innovation Award – EVs & Beyond

Electric Autonomous Wheelchair Wins CES Innovation Award – EVs & Beyond

In recent years, advancements in mobility technology have played a crucial role in enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities and seniors. One standout innovation in this field is Whill’s autonomous Model A power chair, which earned an Innovation Award at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas.

Whill’s Model A was recognized in the “Accessibility” category for its groundbreaking features that empower users to navigate airports effortlessly, catering to individuals with varying cognitive, mobility, hearing, or visual abilities. This recognition highlights a growing awareness of the needs of passengers with reduced mobility, a demographic that is becoming increasingly significant in the airline industry.

As this demographic expands, airports are faced with the challenge of meeting the demands for additional services to accommodate passengers who require assistance. Whill’s autonomous power chair addresses these needs by autonomously transporting passengers to their gates, effectively alleviating the demand on airlines to provide manual wheelchair push services. This not only enhances the travel experience for those with mobility challenges but also grants them the freedom to explore the airport more independently.

The innovative design of the Model A is user-friendly; passengers simply select their destination on a touch screen, press start, and the power chair seamlessly takes over. With advanced technology, including sensors that can detect and avoid obstacles, passengers can navigate the airport safely and reliably. Whill plans to enhance this experience further by allowing users to make stops at convenient locations like restrooms, shops, and restaurants during their journey.

Whill has conducted successful trials of its autonomous chair service in several major U.S. airports, such as Atlanta, San Jose, and Grand Rapids, showcasing its effectiveness in real-world environments. Most recently, the company announced the first permanent installation of this service in North America at Winnipeg International Airport in Manitoba—an exciting step toward making travel more accessible.

The ecosystem surrounding Whill’s products is designed to be adaptable to various short-distance transportation needs. Beyond its autonomous technology, Whill provides manual drive mobility rentals for use in locations like malls and museums, along with multi-day vacation options. Its models, including the Model C2 and Model F, cater to both short and long-term mobility challenges.

Whill doesn’t just stop at airports and travel destinations. Their offerings extend into areas not typically accessible by standard transportation methods, including electric kick scooters and taxis. This comprehensive approach ensures that individuals who may struggle with mobility have a greater range of options available to them.

Kerry Renaud, Whill’s North America CEO, expressed pride in the company’s recognition at CES. He emphasized Whill’s commitment to expanding innovative solutions to meet the diverse mobility needs of their customers, encompassing everything from personal mobility aids to fully autonomous and manual drive power chairs.

This is not the first time Whill has been acknowledged for its contributions to accessibility solutions. In 2022, they earned a CES Innovation Award for their Model F, a foldable power chair designed specifically for travel. Their ongoing commitment and innovations in the Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) sector aim to significantly enhance accessibility in public spaces like airports and convention centers worldwide.
