Lower Speed Limit, Dimension Restrictions for Personal Mobility Aids
In a significant move to enhance safety on public paths, new regulations are set to be implemented in the first quarter of next year. One of the most notable changes is the reduction of the maximum speed limit for Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs) from 10 kilometers per hour (km/h) to 6 km/h. Mr. Baey, a prominent figure behind this initiative, emphasizes that the new speed limit of 6 km/h is akin to a brisk walking pace. Effective from the upcoming year, PMAs utilized on public paths must adhere to specific dimensional constraints: a maximum width of 70 cm, a length of 120 cm, a height of 150 cm, and a laden weight of 300 kg. These regulations are consistent with existing dimensions for PMAs on public transport, ensuring uniformity across various environments and reinforcing safety measures in crowded public spaces.
To further uphold these standards, it will become illegal to display, advertise, or sell PMAs that exceed these set dimension limits or possess a speed capacity beyond the established maximum of 6 km/h. Recognizing that many genuine users may currently possess PMAs capable of reaching speeds up to the previous limit of 10 km/h, the government has implemented a transition period. Mr. Baey stated that these devices will still be permitted on public paths until the end of 2028, provided they are operated within the new speed limit and meet the forthcoming size restrictions. This grace period aims to ease the adjustment for existing PMA users and allow them to adapt to the new requirements gradually.
The precise timeline for enforcing these new regulations will depend on the passage of necessary legislative amendments in parliament, anticipated later this year.
