Mobile Dental Clinic Launches to Support 1,900 Seniors

New Mobile Dental Clinic Initiative in Singapore: Enhancing Dental Care for Seniors

An Innovative Approach to Accessibility

In an exciting move to address the oral health needs of seniors residing in nursing homes, the National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) has launched a new mobile dental clinic. This initiative aims to make dental care more accessible for the elderly, especially those who may find it challenging to visit traditional dental practices, thus recognizing the critical need for convenient healthcare solutions.

Services Offered by the Mobile Clinic

The mobile dental clinic is designed to provide essential services such as dental screenings, tooth extractions, and X-rays, effectively bridging the gap in dental care for seniors. Traveling between various nursing home facilities, the clinic is set to make a significant impact on the oral health of its patients.

Accessibility Features

Understanding the unique challenges faced by seniors, the mobile clinic is equipped with specialized features. A wheelchair lift facilitates access for wheelchair users, while knee-break dental chairs are introduced to accommodate those with limited mobility. This approach is a thoughtful enhancement over traditional dental setups, where patients often struggle to sit comfortably during treatments.

Generous Sponsorship

This noteworthy initiative is made possible through a generous $2.05 million contribution from the Japanese multinational Lion Corporation. As part of its mission, the mobile dental clinic aims to screen 1,900 seniors across ten nursing homes by 2028, with its inaugural launch occurring at Bright Hill Evergreen Home in Punggol on September 26.

Addressing Critical Oral Health Issues

The significance of this initiative is underscored by alarming statistics from the 2019 National Adult Oral Health Survey, revealed by NDCS Chief Executive Goh Bee Tin during the launch event. A staggering 12.5% of seniors aged 65 and above are completely toothless, while 64% lack sufficient teeth for basic oral functions like chewing and speaking. The findings underscore the pressing need for improved dental care in this demographic, highlighting a need that has often gone unaddressed.

Ongoing Challenges in Oral Health Awareness

Professor Goh emphasized the lack of awareness among seniors regarding dental care. Nearly one in three seniors are unaware of the causes of dental issues, showcasing a critical gap in education about oral health. This new mobile clinic not only aims to provide immediate care but also seeks to foster greater awareness among seniors in intermediate and long-term care facilities.

Complementing Existing Programs

The mobile dental clinic is part of a broader NDCS strategy, complementing other initiatives like T-Docs, a tele-dentistry program that offers preventive care for vulnerable seniors. By combining telemedicine with on-site treatment, the NDCS aims to ensure comprehensive care for the elderly.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, the mobile clinic hopes to expand its services to cater to residents with special healthcare needs. NDCS Deputy CEO Lui Jeen Nee noted that the clinic, capable of accommodating around eight patients daily, aims to serve about four to five nursing homes within its first operational year. The clinic will initially focus on nursing homes in eastern Singapore before branching out to other regions.

A Unique Approach to Dental Education

What sets this initiative apart from other mobile dental clinics is its commitment to equipping non-oral healthcare professionals within nursing homes. By employing an oral health education program, the mobile clinic will enable these professionals to provide basic dental care and education, addressing the ongoing oral health challenges faced by seniors.

Testimonials of Impact

The significance of this initiative is already resonating with residents like Madam Toh Yeow Leng, who expressed relief at the convenience the mobile clinic offers. At 87 years old, she remarked on the difficulties she faced in traveling to dental appointments prior to the clinic’s arrival at the nursing home. Now, with services brought directly to their doorstep, residents can access crucial dental care without the added stress and transport challenges.

Community Impact

As Ms. Cheng Siok Khoong, CEO of Bright Hill Evergreen Home, articulated, the mobile dental clinic stands to enhance the overall well-being of residents by sustaining proper nutrition and boosting their social confidence—both vital components for successful aging.

Through this initiative, the NDCS is not just addressing immediate dental needs but is also striving to create a lasting culture of health awareness among seniors, demonstrating a comprehensive approach toward enhancing the quality of life for the elderly in Singapore.
