Transforming the Concept of Aging in Place

Improving Independence: The Home Depot’s New Initiative for Seniors

For decades, seniors wishing to remain in their homes faced significant challenges. They often relied on local options to enhance accessibility and comfort, from ramps for front doors to stair lifts and simple modifications like grab bars and walk-in showers. Traditionally, this involved reaching out to independent contractors or local home medical equipment (HME) providers for help. However, the landscape is changing, and now seniors can turn to a familiar name: The Home Depot.

A New Partnership for Independent Living

In an innovative move, The Home Depot has launched its Independent Living program in partnership with National Seating & Mobility (NSM). This initiative offers in-home consultations and equipment installation, significantly reducing the barriers seniors face in making essential modifications to their homes. Initially available in select stores, the program is expected to expand based on growing demand.

Scott Bomar, Senior Vice President of Home Services for The Home Depot, highlights the importance of this initiative. “By 2030, one in five Americans will be retirement age, and 90% of Americans 65 and older want to remain in their homes as they age,” he notes. The initiative aims to address this burgeoning market, providing the necessary support for independent living.

What the Program Offers

The program started quietly this summer, launching in about ten stores in New Jersey and Missouri, areas noted for their high demand. Currently, customers receive a free in-home consultation lasting between 45 to 90 minutes. Following the consultation, NSM’s team can install various accessibility solutions, including modular, portable, and full-sized ramps, stair lifts, and grab bars.

Bomar explains that the intention is to grow the list of available services. “Currently, we offer installation of stair lifts, vertical lifts, ramps, door openers, and grab bars, and we plan to introduce bath and kitchen modifications and electronic monitoring in the near future.” Home Depot aims to emphasize safety, comfort, and appealing design through these modifications.

Expanding Horizons for NSM

For NSM, partnering with a retail giant like Home Depot opens new avenues for visibility and service delivery. Founded in 1992, NSM has grown from five locations to a nationwide presence, focusing on mobility and accessibility solutions. CEO Bill Mixon underscores the importance of this partnership: “This comprehensive approach allows NSM to assist clients in all aspects of their lives, supporting those who wish to age comfortably at home.”

With a dedicated workforce nearly 1,000 strong, NSM is in homes across the U.S. daily to conduct assessments and deliver equipment. Mixon emphasizes the urgency: many homes are not equipped for individuals with declining mobility. “Education and access to resources supporting independent living in the home can prepare individuals to proactively make necessary changes,” he says.

The Target Audience

The Home Depot’s audience extends beyond seasoned DIY enthusiasts; it also encompasses a growing demographic of seniors seeking HME solutions. The retailer has already established an online presence, featuring a range of accessibility products, from bed rails to mobility devices. However, the availability of in-store displays and in-home consultations marks a significant shift in how The Home Depot engages with this market.

As the retail landscape becomes increasingly competitive—Best Buy and Amazon have also ventured into senior-focused programs—The Home Depot is carving out its niche. Interestingly, the Independent Living program has not been widely advertised; instead, the company relies on targeted campaigns to reach potential customers effectively.

Focused Marketing Strategies

In-store signage and knowledgeable associates are critical to connecting with customers. Bomar mentions, “In areas where we offer these services, customers will find prominent in-store signage and can speak to associates knowledgeable about our offerings.” Furthermore, online campaigns guide interested customers to the program’s dedicated website, homedepot.com/independentlivingservices, where they can check service availability in their area.

The pandemic has accelerated interest in aging in place, pushing The Home Depot to adapt quickly. Bomar notes that the heightened demand is prompting faster growth than initially anticipated.

Collaboration for Better Living

Both NSM and The Home Depot find strength in their partnership, sharing similar philosophies in customer service and community engagement. Ultimately, the goal is to provide accessible solutions for independent living, empowering seniors to take proactive steps toward enhancing their quality of life.

Mixon articulates this shared vision perfectly: “By leveraging collaboration, we can enhance quality of life through independence for this growing demographic.” The initiative strives not just to sell products but to educate and inspire seniors about their options for aging in place.

Available Items Through the Partnership

The Independent Living program features various installation services to meet the unique needs of seniors. These include:

  • Stairlift installation
  • Wheelchair ramp installation
  • Grab bar installation
  • Wheelchair lift installation
  • Automatic door opener installation
  • Deck ramp installation (along with ramp or platform lift installation)
  • Professional measurement for customized installations
  • On-the-spot quotes that include labor and materials
  • Delivery and installation by certified technicians
  • Removal and hauling away of existing equipment if replacing

Through this initiative, The Home Depot and NSM aim to redefine options for seniors and their families, ensuring that independence and comfort are within reach.
